John Tory, the mayor of Toronto, has announced he is resigning from office after getting involved with one of his former staff members.

According to Tory, the connection began during the pandemic and ended on mutual consent early this year. The worker found employment outside of City Hall.

Tory apologised to his family, his staff, and his wife of more than 40 years, Barbara Hackett, during the news conference.

I understand that allowing this friendship to grow was a grave mistake on my side, Tory admitted.

Tory claims he will take some time to think about his errors and attempt to win back his family’s trust.

It has been the job of a lifetime, I want to thank the people of Toronto for their confidence in me as mayor, he continued.

According to the city of Toronto’s website, Tory was chosen as the 65th mayor of Toronto in 2014 and reelected in 2018 and 2022.
